The Promised Land – Barack Obama

A Promised Land: Obama, Barack: 9781524763169: Books - Amazon.ca

Rating: 4.2/5

Obama’s humour and detailed life sketch transports readers from humble beginnings in Hawaii with his single mom and grandparents, to raising his own family and becoming the first black president of the United States. The 44th president, often characterized by his cheeky smile, charm and good looks, exhibited tremendous composure, wisdom and knowledge in tackling complicated issues like the economic recession, and the war in Iraq. I appreciated the honesty, integrity, and humility that was apparent in his storytelling and how he described his close relationships. The audiobook was a treat – Obama has such a calming voice.

Insights/Thoughts:

  • [personal] My preferred method of digesting books is still print. While audio is convenient and takes less energy, I also find I glaze over more complicated sections with a superficial sense of understanding. I think I might save audiobooks for lighter reading material, fiction, or if the reader is the protagonist of the book. Otherwise, I still prefer reading my kindle/physical books.
  • You can’t please everyone, and you shouldn’t. Know who is important in your life, your purpose in this world, and do your best to be the best human being you can.
  • One error/misjudgment does not define your future. One success does not predict future successes.
  • It takes a certain type of intelligence to not take life too seriously and just roll with the punches.
