- Typically not a genre I would read but my lil’ work book club voted for this one so here we are. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a bit snobbish when it comes to books. It was difficult for me to not critique the middle-school -esque, quasi-smut writing style (because why is every man so desirable you want to rip his clothes off??) and concentrate on the plot instead. I’ve noticed my reading tastes have changed over the years; books that I used to love feel corny or less impactful. The lesson is to continue broadening the reading repertoire and to challenge the perspectives I’ve developed while appreciating the ability to take off/on the critic’s hat when necessary to enjoy a story. Every story can be enjoyable (not that we have to read it).
